The RPG of
J.R.R.Tolkiens books Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit . This is actually a basic version
of the more complex Rolemaster system also published by ICE . As of writing ICE have
actually lost all rights to the Tolkien licence , which is a shame because this will spell
the demise of this particular game which is reasonably decent . The rules uses a Ranks
system , whereby as your PC increases in levels you can improve skills in areas that you
wish to develop . This works pretty well and is a good alternative to Basic Dungeons &
Dragons or even AD&D . As with most systems you get to choose a class when creating
your character (warrior , scout , animist , etc.) and your initial skills are based around
this . The d10 is used exclusively throughout and is percentile based . The game can be
quite deadly as critical hit tables are included , and straight kills can be accomplished
by the lowliest of characters or creatures . The setting is rich , as you would expect
& highly detailed - too much so because there`s very little room for the GM to alter
things without lots & lots of work . The maps were real works of art with the
continent map being released as a poster . The last edition was in book format , both hard
& soft backed , but the rules were essentially the same as the first edition with
minor re-writes & revisions . If you want more rules you can use MERP with Rolemaster
