A strange
yet enigmatic combination of Science Fiction , Fantasy & Horror from Scandinavia .
This game shouldn`t work but it does & it is one of my all time favorites . Lets not
beat about the bush : This IS a combat game . The setting is our solar system the time is
the future - a couple of thousand years maybe from now (The 1st edition isn`t clear on
this point) . Earth has been abandoned due to extreme levels of pollution and the other
planets have been claimed by one of several Megacorporations - Capitol (The good ole US of
A) , Mishima (Japanese samurai) , Bauhaus (Teutonic /Aryan Europeans) , Imperial (A
combine of English,Scottish,Welsh & Irish) & Cybertronic (A new MegaCorp that has
just arrived on the scene) . Add to this a religious organisation based loosly on the
Roman Catholic Church simply called the Brotherhood and you have the foundations .
Unfortuantly , there are also The Dark Apostles. Mankind reached out to the furthest
reaches of the Solar System and discovered a new planet beyond Pluto , which they called
Nero . The first settlers to land on this planet discovered a portal , which they opened
releasing the equivalent to H.P.Lovecraft`s Old Ones into our reality . The incursion of
Dark Symmetry is now widespread and technology is not to be trusted as it can be
controlled by these creatures . For this game characters need big guns `cos the nasties
are tough & very dangerous . The system is quite basic & the majority of the book
is taken up by background , but this is one of the good points - It is so well thought out
. Character Generation is excellent as are the character sheets . As a side line
Heartbreaker released another game called Kult (see later) which uses a very similar
background & creatures but is set in the present .A wargame called Warzone also
appeared based in the Mutant Chronicles setting which really added to the RPG .
Unfortuantly there were very few supplements released for it - One book for each
corporation , one for the Brotherhood , a set of three scenarios & two books dealing
with the Dark Apostles : Algeroth & Illian Very atmospheric and detailed background
wise - I shouldn`t like it but I do & I can`t recommend it enough . This is my all
time number 2 ! |
